{The 14th Chess Olympiad, organized by FIDE and comprising an open[1] team
tournament, as well as several other events designed to promote the game of
chess, took place between October 26 and November 9, 1960, in Leipzig, East
Germany. T....} 1. e4 {In
Olympiad play, Mikhail Tal was a member of eight Soviet teams, each of which
won team gold medals (1958, 1960, 1962, 1966, 1972, 1974, 1980, and 1982), won
65 games, drew 34, and lost only two games (81.2 percent). This percentage
makes him the player with the best score among those participating in at least
four Olympiads. Individually, Tal won seven Olympiad board medals, including
five gold (1958, 1962, 1966, 1972, 1974), and two silver (1960, 1982).[8]} e6 {

Fischer represented the United States on top board with great distinction
at four Olympiads: Olympiad Individual result U.S. team result Leipzig 1960

was +40 âˆ'7 =18, for 49/65 or 75.4%.[92][93] In 1966, he narrowly missed the
individual gold medal, scoring 88.23% to World Champion Tigran Petrosian's 88.
46%. Fischer played four more games than Petrosian, faced stiffer opposition,
and would have won the gold if he had accepted Florin Gheorghiu's draw offer
in the penultimate round rather than declining it and suffering his only loss.
[94] Fischer had planned to play for the U.S. at the 1968 Lugano Olympiad,
but backed out when he saw the poor playing conditions.[95][96] In the 1962
Varna Olympiad, on the eve of the match between the U.S. and Argentine teams,
Fischer boasted to his teammates that he would finish his game in 25 moves.
His opponent the next day, Miguel Najdorf, opened with the Sicilian Najdorf,
and resigned on move 24.} 2. d4 {Despite the alienation from her son, Regina
in 1960 staged a five-hour protest in front of the White House urging
President Dwight Eisenhower to send an American team to that year's chess
Olympiad (set for Leipzig, East Germany, behind the Iron Curtain), and to help
support the team financially.[48]} d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Ba5 6. b4 cxd4
