The 3 Stages of a Chess Game

A chess game is divided into three distinct phases: the Opening (development), the Middlegame (strategy and tactics), and the Endgame (conversion). Understanding the specific goals and priorities of each stage is essential for improvement. This guide breaks down what you should focus on during every part of the game.

1

The Opening

The first 10-15 moves of the game. The board is full, and both armies are waking up.

Main Goal: Development & King Safety

2

The Middlegame

Starts when the pieces are developed and the Kings are castled. This is where the heavy fighting happens.

Main Goal: Attack & Strategy

3

The Endgame

Starts when most pieces (especially Queens) have been traded off. The board looks empty, but every move is critical.

Main Goal: Promotion

The Most Common Mistake

Beginners often mix up the goals. They try to attack the King in the Opening (before they are ready), or they hide their King in the Endgame (when it should be fighting).

Remember: Opening = Safety. Endgame = Activity.
